let's talk about today because it is a milder day than yesterday for most of us, although still some areas we have pockets of 30s. some patchy fog and even a couple of sprinkles south and southwest of town right now. we'll have a mix of sun and clouds today. 50 by noon with a high in the mid-50s. that's in d.c. east and northeast of town, we may hold in the upper 40s but west of town, i think we're going to the low 60s in areas toward the shenandoah valley and in toward our southern suburbs. this morning a few sprinkles here. heavier wins toward michigan and illinois with thunderstorms with just lighter showers coming out of west virginia into northern virginia, along and south of interstate 66. this is going to track into southern maryland as well the next hour or two. visibilities are down to a mile in gaithersburg. so some low clouds, a little fog here and there but the worst fog is up in garrett county. looking at zero right now. and temps range from a chilly 34 in annapolis to 5 2k in -- to 52 in winchester. atmosphere can't make up its

mind right now but it will be mild the next couple of days. monika samtani, it's 6:00, timesaver traffic. it's not your typical 6:00 hour on a tuesday morning, i have to say. it's pretty light outside. no big issues to report. you've got e one slow stretch which is kind of out of the ordinary leave the district along 295. through cheverly right here heading inbound into the northeast corridor, everything looks good. let's take a live look outside. if you're planning to head over here on the northbound side of i-95 at prince william parkway heading toward newington and springfield, you're going to be fine and all lanes are open there as well. back to the maps this time heading to the other side 270 southbound where you've got that slow stretch route 109 to 121. that's basically it. a live look further south at falls road. traffic looks really light here down to the point where the lanes divide. we'll take it. back to you, mike and jess. >> thanks, monika. the president is on the road. he will be in nevada today to

have his push for immigration reform. his trip, of course, comes the day after a bipartisan group in the senate came up with their own framework on the it would provide for the estimated 11 million immigrants to one day become citizens. it would allow more guest workers and require a way for employers to verify they're hiring legal workers. deal zeal is live on -- delia goncalves is live on capitol hill with more. good morning, delia. >> reporter: good morning, jessica. members of this bipartisan gang of eight say this pathway to citizenship will not be an easy one. apparently, the pathway to a vote in congress will not be easy either. this plan has its critics and many of those critics say it amounts to nothing more than amnesty. and they doubt the administration's commitment to secure the borders. 22 g.o.p. senators oppose a similar plan in 2007. all of them still in the senate but republicans who support this plan say reform is good

for elections and the economy. >> reform is critical to the nation's economy. the reality is that even in a very tight economy, there are all types of industries in our country which have used the work of immigrants every day to achieve the economic goals of those industries. >> the vast majority of americans believe that we need to have a legal immigration system that works an we have no is not a 21st century legal immigration system. >> reporter: the house is working on its own version of immigration reform. however, many democratic leaders say they're not quite as far along as the senate and of course they have their own critics, many of them republican members of the house who are concerned about money and whether or not the money will go towards securing our boarders. we'll have much more -- our borders. we'll have much more coming up in the half-hour. >> thanks, delia, live on capitol hill this morning.

in the last year border patrol agents have been dealing with more people trying to come to the country illegal. in 2012 agents made more than 356,000 arrests along the mexican border. that's about 29,000 more than the previous year. nationwide arrests by the border patrol increased about 7% from 340,000 in 2011 to almost 365,000 in 2012. congress has now passed the $50 billion package of emergency relief for victims of superstorm sandy. the senate passed the bill last night 62-36. supporters say the money is desperately needed to rebold the homes and the businesses in new york, new jersey and connecticut. the 36 republicans who voted against it wanted $50 billion in spending cuts somewhere else to keep from this bill adding to the national debt. president obama said he will indeed sign the bill. the president is also asking three communities affected by mass shootings to help convince congress to pass some new gun corol

legislation. the president and members of his cabinet met month with police chiefs in aurora, colorado, oak creek, wisconsin and newtown, connecticut. the president said that no group is more important than law enforcement when it comes to the gun control phase. time right now is 6:05. i'm watching your money. wall street will be watching at the federal reserve begins a two-day meeting here in d.c. at the fed's previous meeting, policymakers promised to keep interest rates near record lows till the unemployment rate falls below 6.5%. it's currently at 7.8%. unfriday the government is scheduled to release the january unemployment report. yahoo reported profits and sales which beat wall street estimates. this is the first quarter under the c.e.o. marissa mayer who left google to join yahoo. and hostess is expected to announce a bidder for drakes

howard here with your weather first. milder weather on tap for today. watch out for patchy fog this morning. then a mix of sun and clouds. temperatures range in the low 50s to the low 60s in the lower shenandoah valley. looking for a high this afternoon right around 56. we're going to take a live look first at i-270 where pretty normal for this time of the morning. route 109 to 121 and no delays from germantown to rockville where the lanes divide. we'll switch over to 9 a on the southbound side of -- 95 on the southbound side of maryland. a timey bit of volume but really no delays as you head to 212 in calverton and college park on the beltway. back with more in a few

minutes. mike and jess? >> thanks, monika. just about 6:10. here are some of the other things making news now. family members of a new york city woman who vanished while she was vacationing in turkey are now working with u.s. officials trying to find her. 33-year-old sarai left on a trip by herself. when a family member called the hostile where she stayed, all of her things were still in her room. research shows women who inherited harmful mutations in their braca gene are at a higher risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer. those women also undergo menopause sooner than other women. usually at age 50 compared to age 53. researchers followed more than 1,000 women. they found women who are heavy smokers with a mutated gene have an even earlier onset of

menopause, right around 46 years. it's early in the season but tiger woods has his first victory of 2013. he took the farmers insurance open at torrey pines. this is his seventh time he's won this particular tournament. he finished 14 under on the week. every time tiger has won this tournament in his career, he's gone on to win at least four more later in the season. and now he is second all time with the number of wins. >> we'll see if it works this time. every year during the super bowl the commercials of course one of the biggest draws which keeps people in their seats. >> all week long we've been showing you some of the most memorable ones we all love. this one is featuring two haul of famers who made their debut in 1983. >> what's in the bag? big macs? fries? >> play you for it. >> you and me for my big mac? >> the first one that misses

happening outside with our day planner. boy, i hope i'm in the right broadcast show here. i think i may be in the wrong rundown. we'll give you this one regardless. temperatures will be climbing into the low 50s at 1:00. and as we head toward the afternoon, mid-50s with a mix of sun and clouds. so the west of town, that's where i think we're heading into the 60s. the shenandoah valley, areas toward culpeper, fredricksburg. yes, you will crack 60 today. visibility an issue out west in garrett county, quarter mile. we're down to a mile at the air park in montgomery county. so pockets of dense fog but nothing too widespread at this hour. and once we get rid of the colder air and some sun breaks out in spots, then we'll be really warming up. they're warming up here. the warm air is helping produce the heavier rains in michigan. we've got a few lighter showers for the most part coming in from west virginia into northern virginia this morning. along and south of interstate 66, across fauquier county into in toward prince william. just on the fairfax-prince

william border here. it's moving east, southeast. we'll get into st. mary's and calvert with maybe the heavier shower just south of manassas headed for dale city and potomac mills area the next little while. want company, you may get -- quantico, you may get a passing sprinkle. providence 28. out to the west, look at all the 50s. roanoke 55. charleston 53 degrees. we've got some 50s that have made it in areas in the shenandoah valley and close to 50 in round hill and western loudoun but leesburg is 36. yeah, there's a hill right here. pretty big one. that's the difference between the warm air and the cold air. look at the low to mid-30s now to our east. bowie is 36. but southern prince george's county, andrews, baden 44. waldorf 45. so we just got to get rid of these few pockets of cold and it will be a more comfortable afternoon. good visibility. partly cloudy out there and mostly cloudy. feeling like 39 with a south

wind at 5 and humidity high this morning, 89%. we're going to watch the showers for the most part stay in pennsylvania except for the little ones we've got this morning. here we are at lunch time. in the afternoon milder. 50s and low 60s. some areas well northern and northeastern maryland, perhaps staying in the upper 40s. now, overnight tonight, fairly quiet, clouds fill back in, some spotty drizzle not out of the question. tomorrow is going to depend on how much sunshine we see. we stay with the clouds. we'll stay in the 60-degree range, low 60s. if we can bust out a little sunshine, 65, even 70 south isn't out of the question. here come the showers and storms wednesday evening into wednesday night before the colder air moves back in here for thursday. and thursday's temperatures will be steady or falling. 56 this afternoon. some patchy fog this morning. 60s out west. tomorrow yellow alert day for the afternoon and evening thomples. could -- evening thunderstorms. could have heavy downpours, gusty winds, 66. heading for thursday, windy and colder, 46.

by friday, you'll remember that it's january and now february on friday. the weekend's highs old in the 30s. i guess phil will see his shadow regardless of what's going on in punxsutawney. >> doesn't he always? seems to be a pattern every year. but it's still fun. if you're planning to head around town, actually, you know what? it's been kind of fun. i guess that's a good way to describe traffic sometimes, especially when you're not dealing with delays or any big deals. southern maryland, route 301, 210 from accokeek to oxon hill and across the wilson bridge into alexandria. we'll take a live look on the northbound side of i-95. again, you've just got the brake lights down in lorton and in springfield. 395 a few brake lights at duke street but that's really it right now. back to the maps, this time to the west side of town looking good. leaving the gw parkway, you have a timey bit of slow traffic right here as you leave the bridge span but no problems through the tysons area, toll road, 66.

your weather first. 6:21 on this tuesday morning. some temperatures especially east of town are still in the 30s. out toward the shenandoah valley, we have some low 50s already. grab the appropriate jacket but get ready for a milder day than yesterday. highs in the mid-50s. we're looking at 1346s on south and -- at 60s south and southwest of town. we'll talk about warmer temperatures for your wednesday. good morning, everybody. i am here on bourbon street in new orleans. super bowl week has begun. the baltimore ravens arrived monday afternoon to get settled into their hotel and talk with the media folks for a little bit. they got a little practice in, in the morning on monday before

they left. but even after that, the fun began. thousands of ravens fans braved the freezing rain and packed baltimore's inner harbor for a sendoff party. head coach john harbaugh said the energy out there was just electric. the team boarded their charter at bwi and arrived at new orleans mid afternoon and enjoyed a rather large police escort to the hotel. that's where we caught up with the team. and the players couldn't stop talking about the excitement. >> that's baltimore, man. that city is awesome. you know, i told john and i told a couple other guys, i said, you know, this feeling is great. this feeling is great. the sendoff is often but there's nothing better than coming home as world champions. >> the fans were crazy. they had the music going and there was thousands of people there and everybody was excited. they were doing the raven chant that they do. we were kind of all on the way to the airport pretty excited about that. >> reporter: over the course of

his reign, commissioner roger goodell has made it his mission to make the game of football much safer from stricter penalties and doctors on the side lines. but it's been met with mixed emotions. many think it's affecting the game of football while others like president barack obama appreciate what he's doing. in an interview released yesterday, president obama said if he had a son right now, wee not allow him to play the sport of football. he feels the risks are too dangerous. both head coaches john and jim harbaugh where asked about those comments. as you can imagine, they thought quite differently. >> i have a 4-month-old, almost soon to be 5-month-old son jack harbaugh. and president obama feels that way, then will be a little less competition for jack harbaugh when he gets older. >> there's no game like football. it's the type of sport that brings out the best in you. it really -- it kind of shows you who you are. i think it's a huge part of our educational system in this

news in the forecast, at least in the next few days. >> temperature wise we're going to be well above average. 44 is the average high. we're already there going into the 50s and some 60s in our southern and southwestern suburbs. no gloves, no hat, no ear muffs, just a jacket this morning with temperatures starting in the 40s and winds which are on the light side. beautiful sky right now. we're will 45 minutes or so till the sunrise and looking off to the east, the first light es of the predawn glow. it's -- lights of the predown glow. it's pretty out there. temperatures will be rising to 55 by noon. mid-50s at 4:00. low 60s to our south and southwest for highs. some showers and storms across parts of michigan, back toward missouri and illinois. we've had some lighter showers this morning coming out of west virginia into virginia riding along and south of 66. it is shrinking but i still think a few of these are going to sneak in toward southern fairfax, southern prince george's county and charles county and might make the trip into calvert and st. mary's.

fog? we have visibilities to three- quarters in gaithersburg so patchy fog for the next couple of hours and temperatures all over the board from 34 in annapolis to 52 in winchester. had a 54 called in from sperryville. we're 42 officially at reagan national. we go to monika samtani now at 6:30. volume becoming an issue. just volume becoming an issue, but there are no big accidents to report. no big deals i'm happy to say. look at the beltway behind me. you've got a couple of slow stretches. for example, right here inside the beltway on 66 around the dulles toll road, access road. a little bit right here on 295 and in cheverly as well. but as you head in on 270 southbound, you just got that stretch from 109 to 121. then let's take a look in germantown on the sohbound side. so it's going to slow down right here at father hurley boulevard. trust me, the pace improves as you head to the point where the lanes divide. another live picture, this time to the other side of town. here's what it looks like on the inbound side of i-66 at monument drive. route 50 to 123 will be your

yesterday, undocumented immigrants must pass a background check, pay fines and back taxes and learn english. ensure the illegal immigrants will not get citizenship before immigrants already working towards a green card. labor unions support this plan. >> we will march, rally, pray and knock on every door in congress to remind lawmakers that our nation deserves an immigration system that sustains our communities, our families, and an economy that values a prosperous nation built by immigrants. >> the president believes that it's very important that we move forward on comprehensive immigration reform. it's the right thing to do for the country, for our economy. it's the right thing to do out of fairness to the middle class to make sure that everyone plays by the same set of rules. >> reporter: however, you can imagine the plan has its critics. 22 g.o.p. senators opposed a similar plan back in 2007.

they say this proposal amounts to nothing more than amnesty and the house is also working its own version of immigration reform. and the house has its critics as well. republicans there worried about money and whether or not there's enough money to actually secure our borders properly. the president, though, taking his message on the road. he's heading to nevada a little later this afternoon. back you to, mike, jess. >> delia goncalves live on capitol hill. thanks, delia. d.c. police are asking for your help by identifying a man they believe is a suspect in a sexual assault. police say the man in the video we're going to show you right here is wanted for a sexual assault in the 1400 block of florida avenue northwest. take a look at this video. this assault happened on january 20 around 2:00 in the morning. if you recognize this man, you are asked to please call metropolitan police. back to work for the jurors in the murder trial of a former culpeper police officer. last year daniel harmon-wright

shot and killed patricia cook while she was sitting in her jeep. harmon-wright says he shot her in self-defense saying cook trapped his arm in the window of her jeep and started dragging him. prosecutors disagree saying it was excessive force which turned into murder. the jury got the case yesterday afternoon deliberating for three hours. they went home after that again they get the case one more time today. have you got an flu shot yet? if you haven't you have another opportunity today and it's free. prince george's hospital center is offering a free flu shot clinic this afternoon in its pavilion lobby on hospital drive if landover, maryland. the vaccines are going to be offered from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. they are only for people over the age of 18. maryland right now is one of more than 40 states still reporting widespread influenza cases. time right now is 6:35. i am watching your money. so how do you deal with having should much money? nice problem to have. that's exactly the problem that's facing d.c. lawmakers.

at the end of the 2012 fiscal year, the city is expected to have a surplus of $400 million. councilman jack evans wants the surplus to be added to the rainy day fund. that would give the city $1.6 billion in that rainy day fund. the reserve fund would help protect the city if there was a sudden reduction in federal spending. the maker of the blackberry set to unveil an upgraded smartphone yesterday. the new blackberry 10 system will have a speedier browser. it will also have the ability to keep work and personal identities separate on the same phone. blackberry has lost ground in recent years to apple's iphone and google android devices. sales at jcpenney are coming back. by popular demand this week the department store chain will roll out some of the sales it ditched last year. it's a move for customers who want the sales coming back. pennies also plans to add new price tags or signs for more than half of its merchandise. those are going to show

yesterday we got into the middle 40s. that was late that was really a midnight high. we were around 40 early this morning. 50 by noon. mid-50s this afternoon. that's d.c. we get enough sunshine, though, we could make a run toward the 60-degree mark. we'll be even warmer tomorrow. we are dealing with a touch of fog here up toward gaithersburg. their visibilities now back to to and a half miles. a little bit of fog in the mountains. quarter-mile in garrett county and half mile toward petersburg. temperatures are varying all over the place from 30s to 50s. the warm air is west of the appalachians. as the warm air surges toward the midwest, look at all the showers and thunder here. there's snow in northwestern minnesota, the northern plains and cold air. around here this morning, just a few light sprinkles have been coming out of west virginia riding along i-66. this morning as we doom in, you're -- zoom in, you're going to see just sneaking into southern loudoun and now western fairfax. this will be going this way. the area is weakening, lessening but still a couple of sprinkles likely now in

southern prince george's county and charles county. you can see it comes across the river here from dale city and lorton, chantilly south to manassas and into northern fauquier county, toward the plains, haymarket, gainesville seeing just a couple of raindrops on the windshield. temperatures much warmer west of the mountains. we've got 40s and 50s there. look at this. in new england, 20s and 30s. new york now up to 40. locally we've got a big range. it's 33 in millersville. 36 bowie. you head out east to north, we have low 40s. in germantown 31 but we go from 37 in leesburg to 49 in round hill. and it's 39 this morning in springfield. a gorgeous sky once again. we'll show that you on our michael & son weather camera. 42 national. feeling like 39 with a south wind at 5 miles an hour and the humidity is up. so we'll see a couple of sprinkles this morning, but the bulk of the rain today is going to be well north and west of us. we'll get into the milder air shooting temperatures into the 50s, even low 60s. south and southwest of town.

whole dish of take malis -- tamales and if they do that? >> we'll crown them essentially. this is our filling. we're starting off with anything -- any good louisianan would start off with, it's called holy trinity. onions, celery, bell peppers. i add a little bit of tomatoes for the acidity and it helps cool the palate a little bit. that will be the actual sauce itself. we finish it off with a little bit of shrimp stock. we're staying in the shellfish theme. may craw fish comes straight from louisiana. you can see how beautiful and orange those are. that will be the flavor. we'll bring it up to a boil, thicken it. a little bit of corn starch. this is the actual sauce right here. the craw fish tamales are stuffed in the husks. >> this is like a corn husk. >> that's it. you put them in boiling water to make them soft and pliable. you can rip it right off. we stuff them, tie them off

welcome back. almost 6:54 this tuesday morning. your weather first. we have a pretty sky out there, a mix of clouds and sunshine. or at least sunny in about half an hour when the sun comes up. partly sunny, warmer today. highs from the low 50s north and east to the low 60s south and southwest. mid-50s should do it here in d.c. here's a look at some other things making news right now. the boy scouts of america is considering changing its antigay policy. under new rules being prepared by the national organization, the different religion and civic groups which sponsor scouts units would decide for themselves how to address the issue. gay and civil rights groups support the move. religious groups are disappointed. "the new york times" is reporting the pentagon is considering a plan to create a new base in north africa for spy drones. the move is in response to the fight against terror in africa. the u.s. has a limited presence in africa right now with only one permanent base. if approved, the new base could host as many as 300 american
